The Louisiana Engineering Advancement Program is happy to announce the expansion of the LEAP Summer Scholars Program (SSP) to include the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp.  This new addition will be a residential competitive and intensive two-week honors program for students who are entering the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades in the fall of 2007.  Students must currently be in the fifth, sixth, or seventh grade.  Students will be selected by a committee based on the following criteria:

  • Members of a traditionally underrepresented population
  • Have GPA of at least “B” average, especially in Math and Science
  • Score at the median to superior level in standardized mathematics and science tests
  • Interested in mathematics and science
  • Recommended by math and science teachers

In addition, student selection is based on their interest in the Program and willingness to:

-  Support Program goal
-  Commit their time to the full two-week summer course
-  Participate in LEAP sponsored activities during the following academic year
-  Take part in the Follow-up Program until graduation from high school

By making this opportunity available, we hope to encourage more students to strive to reach their goals and become successful, productive citizens, by providing an introduction to STEM education and careers, team work, communication and other opportunities and experiences that are not normally available to them.  In addition, we hope to prepare more underrepresented members of the community to pursue careers in engineering, science, math and technology.

The application process is simple, just download and print the PDF application form and mail it to us prior to the April 27, 2007 deadline.  Selected students will be notified by May 11, 2007.

Program Dates:  ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp will begin with a special orientation for accepted students and parents.  Orientation for the all participants will be June 1, 2007 at the University of New Orleans.  The program will end with a brief closing ceremony on June 22, 2007.  Students will be allowed to return home on Friday, June 15th and must return on Sunday, June 17th.
