Wild Stallions L to R : James Polk, Dane Freeman, Stephen Kovacs, Randy Pearson

LUBBOCK, TX, Apr 2, 2005 — UNO Mechanical Engineering student teams took both First and Second places at the ASME Regional Student Design Competition held March 31st-April 2nd in Lubbock, TX.

The tournament, sponsored annually by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), requires all student teams to compete in a design problem that changes from year to year. For 2005, the problem was to build a Bulk Material Transporter, designed to haul as much rice as possible in a ten minute period. In addition, the vehicle had to ascend three steps, negotiate a 90 degree pivot, descend one step and then dump the rice.

At this year's competition, 26 teams representing 16 Universities vied for Region X honors. The UNO Wild Stallions team finished in First place, with their Stallion I entry hauling 378 lbs. in ten minutes. The UNO Long Grain team, with their entry Mahatmama, finished in Second place with 116 lbs. Both entries overpowered competitors, and it was noted that the First place winner in another Region had hauled approximately 17.5 lbs over the same ten minute period.

Congratulations to Wild Stallions team members Randy Pearson, James Polk, Dane Freeman and Stephen Kovacs and also the Long Grain team members Jeffery Stark, Barrett Moffett, Phuong Hoang and Mario Pineda.
